Fujairah biodiversity achievements took center stage at the prestigious World Conservation Congress 2025 held in Abu Dhabi, where experts and policymakers convened to advance global nature conservation efforts. The Fujairah Environment Authority, actively participating in this quadrennial global event, highlighted its pioneering research on the owl population within Wadi Wurayah, a critical natural reserve in the region.

The congress, held from October 9 to 15, gathers governments, academia, and civil society from around the world to collaborate on protecting natural heritage. On the opening day at the UAE Pavilion, Samiullah Majeed, Terrestrial Biodiversity Inspector at the Fujairah Environment Authority, presented findings revealing seven owl species in Fujairah, including the rare and elusive Omani owl, contributing significantly to the UAE’s total of nine owl species recorded.

Dr. Ali Al Hammoudi, Biodiversity Department Director, explained that under the leadership of Director-General Asila Abdullah Al Mualla, the Authority’s biodiversity team is committed to documenting and protecting Fujairah’s rich wildlife. Using camera traps and working alongside volunteers, the team captures vital data from remote mountain habitats.

Participation in international forums like the World Conservation Congress allows Fujairah to share its success stories and gain insights from global conservation initiatives. The UAE’s role as host reflects its leadership in environmental stewardship, underscored by milestones like COP28 and the UAE Consensus, promoting climate neutrality and sustainable development through strategic programs such as the Green Agenda 2030 and Net Zero 2050.
