At Dubai International Airport (DXB), the baggage mishandling rate is among the lowest in the world, with just 2 bags mishandled per 1,000 passengers. This remarkable statistic owes much to the airport’s state-of-the-art underground baggage handling system—designed to swiftly move millions of bags every year with precision and speed.
Underneath the concourse floors, kilometers of conveyor belts, lifts, tunnels, and storage facilities quietly work in harmony. Bags are tagged and processed through multiple screening stages, funneling through the system on yellow trays. DXB’s Early Bag Storage facility—even before the scheduled flight time—holds thousands of bags securely, ensuring that last-minute check-ins are handled without causing chaos at peak periods.
The journey for each ticketed bag starts well ahead of departure. Once checked in, bags pass through security, quality checks, and automated sorting before being loaded into Unit Loading Devices (ULDs). In these processes, irregular or oversized items receive special handling outside the main belt system to prevent jams or delays. Advanced tracking systems monitor each tray, making real-time adjustments to handling based on weight, destination, flight schedule, and transits.
DXB also uses high-speed transfer tunnels that move luggage at up to 7.5 meters per second in certain sections. Every link in the chain—from check-in agents to porters to logistics staff—is held to strict timing and quality standards. The precise coordination of hundreds of staff behind the scenes, the underground conveyor networks, and early staging of bags all combine to keep the mishandling rate extremely low.
For travelers, this means that even during the busiest travel seasons, they can be confident their belongings are much more likely to arrive on time. And when a bag does get delayed, the airport’s tracking and lost & found systems are designed to reunite most luggage within hours.
