Pakistan is grappling with a significant healthcare crisis as the Pakistan Nursing and Midwifery Council (PNMC) has exposed 38 fake nursing colleges operating across the country. These institutions, which lack official recognition, are enrolling students and issuing degrees that hold no legal standing. The breakdown of these unrecognized colleges is as follows:
Punjab: 25 institutions
Islamabad: 5 institutions
Sindh: 5 institutions
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: 2 institutions
Despite repeated advisories and public notices declaring these colleges illegal, some continue to admit students, exploiting the high demand for nursing education. The PNMC has urged the public to verify the status of any nursing institute on its official website before seeking admission, emphasizing that degrees from unapproved institutions will not be recognized.
This revelation comes at a time when Pakistan is already facing a severe shortage of qualified nurses. The country requires approximately 700,000 nurses, yet the current number falls significantly short. The existence of these fake colleges further undermines the healthcare system by misleading students and failing to provide proper training.
In response to this crisis, Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal has pledged to implement digital reforms to restore the credibility of the nursing profession. These reforms aim to close the critical workforce gap and ensure quality healthcare delivery across Pakistan. The Minister emphasized the importance of transforming the PNMC into a modern, internationally recognized institution to meet both national and international standards.
As the nation confronts this dual challenge of fake institutions and a nursing shortage, the government’s commitment to reform and regulation is crucial in safeguarding the future of healthcare in Pakistan.
