A magnitude 6.7 earthquake rattled the central Philippines late Tuesday night, inflicting structural damage, triggering aftershocks, and causing casualties in the province of Cebu. The tremor struck at 9:59 pm local time, originating at a depth of around 10 km with its epicenter near Bogo City.
Heritage buildings bore the brunt of the quake. Among the damaged structures is the Archdiocesan Shrine of Sta. Rosa de Lima, which sustained partial collapse. In addition, reports emerged of covered courts and other public structures giving way mid-game during the shock.
Communities across Central Visayas observed strong shaking, including in Cebu City. Residents rushed outdoors, many fearing aftershocks while power interruptions affected sections of the island. Local authorities have mobilized disaster teams, assessed building integrity, and suspended classes pending safety inspections.
With no tsunami threat issued, the quake’s broader impact is still being evaluated. The region remains on alert for further aftershocks, and officials continue to gather reports of damage and missing persons.
