Hollywood’s actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA, has issued a forceful statement denouncing Tilly Norwood, an AI-generated “actress,” arguing that the creation undermines what it calls the core of performance: lived experience, emotions, and authenticity. According to SAG-AFTRA, Tilly Norwood is not an actor but a computer-generated character trained on the work of real performers without their permission or compensation.
The union emphasized that creativity should remain human-centered, warning that synthetic performers like Norwood threaten both the rights and livelihoods of current actors. Producers who want to use characters like Tilly Norwood must comply with existing contracts, which often require advance notice and negotiations whenever AI or synthetic performers are involved.
While the studio behind Norwood, Particle6, defends the character as a creative artwork and not a replacement for human talent, the backlash has exposed deep tensions in Hollywood over AI’s role in the entertainment industry. Many see this as a turning point for how synthetic media, AI characters, and human performers will coexist going forward.
