London’s Metropolitan Police have dismantled a major international iPhone smuggling ring, arresting 46 individuals and recovering 40,000 stolen devices bound for China. The operation, codenamed Echosteep, is the UK’s largest-ever crackdown on mobile phone theft.
The investigation began in December 2024 when a woman tracked her stolen iPhone to a warehouse near Heathrow Airport. Officers discovered nearly 900 high-end phones, many still ringing, bound for Hong Kong. This led to a series of raids across London and Hertfordshire, uncovering a network responsible for up to 40% of all phone thefts in the capital.
The stolen devices, primarily iPhones, were smuggled overseas and sold for up to £4,000 each. Street-level thieves were paid up to £300 per phone. The operation also highlighted the use of foil-wrapped phones to evade tracking systems.
Authorities have called on tech companies to enhance security measures to prevent the resale of stolen devices. The crackdown has led to a 13% decrease in personal robberies and a 14% drop in thefts this year.
