BLS International passport, the agency responsible for Indian passport and visa application services in the UAE has issued an important advisory for Indian expats regarding updated passport photo guidelines. This follows new requirements from the Indian Consulate and Embassy that mandate all passport photos comply with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards as of 1 September 2025.
Applicants are now urged to wear dark-coloured attire when visiting BLS centres for passport applications to meet these standards. BLS has added a pop-up notification on its website highlighting the requirement and reminding applicants that white or light-coloured clothing should be avoided to prevent photo rejection due to blending with the background.
The updated guidelines specify that passport photos must be 2×2 inches, with a plain white background and the applicant’s face occupying 80-85% of the frame. Photos must be recent, with no digital alterations allowed, and head coverings only permitted for religious reasons while ensuring full facial visibility.
Non-compliant photos can delay or reject passport applications, so applicants are encouraged to follow these rules carefully to avoid repeated visits. While BLS provides photography services for an additional Dh30, applicants may also use external studios that meet ICAO standards. Parents applying for passports for newborns should note that photos cannot be taken at BLS centres, and original birth certificates attested by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs are required.
This advisory emphasizes the need for careful preparation to ensure smooth passport application processing for Indian expats living in the UAE.
