Dubai Civil Court lawyer fee lawsuit dismissal underscores court scrutiny of disproportionate legal fee claims in high-profile cases. The Dubai Civil Court rejected a lawyer’s attempt to obtain Dh1.6 million in unpaid fees for handling a criminal extradition file, deciding that the Dh500,000 already received was sufficient for the work performed. Case documents reveal the lawyer was retained for a Dh2.1 million fee, with an upfront payment, and moved swiftly to close the extradition case temporarily within ten days of engagement.
However, the defense argued that the additional fee requested was out of proportion to the legal effort expended and questioned the lawyer’s follow-up on the case. Supporting evidence presented by the defense showed repeated attempts to permanently close the case were unsuccessful, and that the Public Prosecution’s decision to close the file remained temporary.
After reviewing all documents, including the fee agreement, power of attorney, and evidence of work performed, the court ruled the lawyer’s claim unjustified. The court’s judgment emphasized that disproportionate fees are not enforceable, especially where the scope and duration of services do not match the claim—a reminder of the importance of clear documentation and proportionality in legal fee arrangements.
