India has placed its eastern seaboard on high alert as Cyclone Montha, a severe cyclonic storm, accelerates toward the coast of Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring Odisha. The system is expected to make landfall between the towns of Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada, late Tuesday evening or overnight.

Authorities have issued red-alert warnings for 19 districts across Andhra Pradesh, triggered by forecasts of extremely heavy rainfall and sustained winds of up to 90-110 km/h, with gusts possibly higher.

Preparations are in full swing: state officials have begun evacuations of low-lying coastal villages, deployed National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) units, and closed schools and colleges ahead of the storm. Nearly 50,000 people have already been moved to relief centres.

The storm’s approach is also stalling maritime and transport operations; ports in Visakhapatnam and Kakinada are under high warning signals and flights and rail services are being adjusted in anticipation of deteriorating weather.

With heavy rains expected to last into Wednesday and the seas roughening rapidly, residents in vulnerable zones are being urged to stay indoors, secure property, avoid coastal zones and heed evacuation notices without delay.
