Every year on November 3, the UAE proudly celebrates Flag Day, a moment that unites the nation in honour of its leadership, history and progress. Introduced in 2013 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the day commemorates the accession of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan as the country’s President in 2004.
The UAE flag, first raised by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in 1971, carries the spirit of unity and pride. Its four colours represent key values — red for courage and sacrifice, green for prosperity, white for peace and honesty, and black for strength and determination.
At exactly 11 am, government institutions, schools and private organisations raise the national flag in unison, creating a powerful symbol of solidarity. Citizens and residents also display the flag across homes, offices and vehicles to show their loyalty and national pride.
When raising the flag, it must be displayed clean, upright and in proportion, with the red stripe positioned vertically at the pole side. Torn or faded flags should be replaced immediately, and it is forbidden to alter the flag’s design or use it on disposable materials.
While UAE Flag Day is not a public holiday, it holds deep emotional significance, reminding people of the country’s unity, respect and unwavering national identity.
