Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and European Council President Antonio Costa have engaged in high-level talks to enhance bilateral cooperation and advance the launch of a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). The discussions, held in Abu Dhabi during Costa’s visit, emphasized expanding strategic collaboration on trade, development, and regional stability, with a special focus on the ongoing negotiations for the CEPA, launched in May 2025. The deal aims to reduce tariffs, improve market access, and foster investments in key sectors such as renewable energy, digital technology, and logistics.

The agreement is part of the EU’s broader strategy to strengthen relations with key partners in the Gulf region, with the UAE already serving as the EU’s second-largest trade partner in the Middle East. Both leaders underlined the importance of economic diplomacy and regional peace, especially amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East and Greece-led efforts to support regional stability.

The UAE-EU CEPA is expected to unlock new opportunities for European and Emirati businesses, boosting trade flow and fostering closer ties in energy, healthcare, manufacturing, and emerging technologies like blockchain and AI. This strategic partnership is also a response to a rapidly changing global trade landscape, aiming for a more resilient and mutually beneficial relationship between the two blocs.
