Effective March 29, 2025, the UAE will enforce the provisions of Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024 on Traffic Regulation, introducing strict penalties for anyone driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotic and psychotropic substances. The law aims to enhance road safety and deter dangerous driving behaviour.
For drunk driving, offenders face imprisonment and/or fines ranging from AED 20,000 to AED 100,000. Licence suspension applies: first offence means at least three months’ suspension, second six months, and the third leads to cancellation of the licence.
For those driving under the influence of narcotic or psychotropic substances, penalties are even fiercer: fines from AED 30,000 to AED 200,000, and licence penalties include a six-month suspension on first offence, one year on the second, and cancellation on the third.
If a fatal accident is caused while impaired by alcohol or drugs, the law mandates at least one year imprisonment and a minimum fine of AED 100,000.
Drivers caught operating a vehicle with a suspended licence will also face criminal consequence: up to three months in jail and a fine of at least AED 10,000, or one of those penalties.
