As of Monday, October 6, Matmo has weakened into a severe tropical storm. However, it continues to pose a threat to neighboring Thailand.

Typhoon Matmo, the 21st named storm of the 2025 Pacific typhoon season, made landfall in Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province, on Sunday afternoon, October 5, with sustained winds of 151 km/h (94 mph). Classified as a Category 14 storm, Matmo has become the strongest typhoon to hit Guangdong this year. The storm caused widespread devastation, including flash floods, infrastructure damage, and significant travel disruptions.
In Guangdong and Hainan provinces, authorities evacuated approximately 347,000 residents in anticipation of the storm. Over 100 flights were canceled at Hong Kong International Airport, with additional delays reported due to heavy rains and strong winds. In Haikou, Hainan’s capital, streets turned into rivers, stranding both tourists and locals. The typhoon’s storm circle spanned over 100 km, bringing waves up to 5 meters high that flooded parts of Yangjiang’s Hailing Island and villages in Wuchuan and Zhanjiang.
As of Monday, October 6, Matmo has weakened into a severe tropical storm. However, it continues to pose a threat to neighboring Thailand, where the Meteorological Department has forecasted heavy rains in the North, Northeast, and East regions on Monday and Tuesday. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have issued warnings for potential flooding and landslides.
