A high-tech drone light show in Liuyang, China’s renowned “hometown of fireworks,” descended into chaos on October 2 when several unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) malfunctioned mid-air. The event, titled “October: The Sound of Blooming Flowers,” intended to dazzle spectators with 3D visual effects over land and water. However, the malfunction caused flaming debris to rain down on the crowd, leading to scenes described as “apocalyptic.” Attendees scrambled for cover, with some using chairs as makeshift shields against the falling sparks.
Despite the frightening spectacle, authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported. A one-mile evacuation zone was established, and additional firefighting teams were deployed to prevent further incidents. Officials from the Liuyang Bureau of Culture and Tourism suggested that unusually dry weather conditions may have contributed to the malfunction.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many expressing concern over the safety of such large-scale pyrotechnic displays. Some users called it a “man-made disaster,” while others questioned the wisdom of conducting fireworks over crowds instead of over water bodies.
