London is witnessing a spectacular revival of one of Japan’s oldest sports. From October 15 to 19, the Royal Albert Hall hosts a historic Grand Sumo Tournament—the first full‐scale event held outside Japan since 1991—bringing over 40 elite rikishi (sumo wrestlers), sumo elders and referees to showcase power, precision, ritual, and raw spectacle.

The tournament is the culmination of more than a decade of planning under the Japan Sumo Association, led by Chairman Hakkaku, who himself won at Royal Albert Hall in 1991. Among the stars is the newly crowned Grand Champion Õnosato Daiki, making waves with a clean record and magnetic style. Other international athletes, including revered names from Mongolia and rising talents from Ukraine, add global depth to the competition.

Building the stage has been an extraordinary effort. Organisers transported eleven tons of clay and earth from across England to create an authentic “dohyō” ring inside the hall. Rice straw bales shaped by traditional techniques—yes, even beer bottles were used to beat them into form—demarcate the boundary lines. A canopy reminiscent of a Shinto shrine hangs above the ring, while ceremonial rituals like salt-throwing and a roof-blessing imbue each match with centuries-of-tradition gravitas.

For spectators, this is much more than wrestling. The bouts are lightning quick—often over in seconds—yet every second is steeped in tension. The performers’ rituals, foot stomps, stylised agitation, the clash of sheer weight and balance—all are part of a rich tapestry that reveals sumo as art as much as combat. Ticket demand exploded quickly, and for many this is a rare chance to witness sumo’s unique culture close-up.
