Actor-Politician Vijay to Meet Stampede Victims’ Families

A month after the tragic stampede at a political rally in Karur, southern India, actor-turned-politician Vijay is scheduled to meet with the families and survivors of the incident during a closed-door gathering. The meeting is taking place at a hotel resort in Mahabalipuram, where his party reserved 50 rooms to accommodate the bereaved families and the injured. 

On September 27 2025, the crowd crush occurred during a rally organised by Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The venue was overwhelmed when supporters surged following a delayed arrival, leading to 41 confirmed deaths and more than 60 injuries. 

In the upcoming meeting, Vijay is expected to offer his condolences in person, promising support and relief to the victims’ families. A relief payment of Rs 20 lakh per deceased family member was announced earlier. 

The decision to host the meeting outside the original venue has triggered debate. Some families and observers voiced concerns that holding it at a resort rather than in Karur may appear detached from the tragedy’s locale. TVK officials argue that logistical and permission-related issues prevented a visit to the original site.
