The Ministry of Education in the United Arab Emirates has defined eight clear categories under which a student’s absence from school will be considered valid and not penalised. This move aims to balance academic discipline with compassionate recognition of genuine circumstances.

Among the recognised reasons for excused absence are certified illness, chronic medical conditions, and accompanying a relative for medical treatment. Participation in national or international duties, the death of a first- or second-degree relative, and emergencies such as natural disasters have also been included in the list of valid reasons. Students of determination and those with long-term health needs receive additional protections and tailored support to ensure their right to education is maintained.

Schools will now apply standard procedures to document absences, requiring students or parents to submit official certificates or authorised documentation. Simultaneously, the ministry emphasises that frequent absences must be managed proactively with support plans, including psychological and educational assistance, regular parent-school communication and academic catch-up strategies. For cases of repeated unexcused absence – defined in other guidelines as more than 15 days a year – students may face disciplinary implications or even repeat the academic year.

By clarifying what counts as an authorised absence, the ministry hopes to strengthen attendance culture in schools across the Emirates and promote student accountability, while ensuring that genuine cases are handled with fairness and support.
