A tragic South Korea market truck crash in Bucheon city has left two people dead and 18 injured after a truck drove through a crowded outdoor market on Thursday morning. The incident occurred shortly before 11 a.m., when shoppers and vendors were present in large numbers.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, transporting the injured to nearby hospitals. Eleven victims sustained serious injuries, while the others were treated for minor wounds.

Authorities confirmed that the driver, a man in his 60s, was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He claimed the truck experienced a mechanical malfunction, which caused him to lose control.

Eyewitnesses reported that the truck initially reversed about 28 metres before surging forward nearly 150 metres, striking multiple stalls and pedestrians before crashing into a storefront. The impact caused significant damage and scattered debris across the market area.

Police have launched a full investigation, including a forensic examination of the truck to determine whether brake failure or driver error caused the crash. Security camera footage from the market is being reviewed to reconstruct the sequence of events.

The Bucheon municipal government announced support for affected vendors, including compensation guidance and psychological counselling for witnesses. Authorities also plan to review safety measures and vehicle-access rules in busy pedestrian areas to prevent similar incidents.

This South Korea market truck crash has drawn attention to pedestrian safety in crowded market zones, where vehicles and pedestrians often share limited space. Officials stressed the importance of stricter traffic controls and safety infrastructure to reduce risks in public areas.
