UAE school admission rules 2026-27 shift to a December 31 cut-off date from the previous August 31, affecting all new admissions to public and private schools, nurseries and early childhood centres starting in August or September. Current students remain unaffected and continue in their existing grades.
New age requirements by grade
-
Pre-K / FS1 / Petite Section / Pre-KG: Child must be 3 years old by December 31 of the admission year.
-
KG1 / FS2 / Moyenne Section / KG1: 4 years old by December 31.
-
KG2 / Year 1 / Grande Section / KG2: 5 years old by December 31.
-
Grade 1 / Year 2 / Cours Préparatoire / Grade 1: 6 years old by December 31.
April-start schools keep the March 31 cut-off unchanged.
Key changes and impacts
The update takes effect for 2026-27 admissions only. Children born September 1–December 31, 2021, previously ineligible for 2025-26, can now join KG1 or KG2. No mid-year enrolments in 2025-26 for new students, even if they meet the new ages—current students cannot skip grades in Term 2 either.
Transfers from other schools, curricula or abroad follow grade-equivalency rules based on completed levels, not the new cut-off.
Planning tips for parents
Children turning the required age after December 31 must wait until the next year—no exceptions. Private schools may assess readiness and space availability. Parents should check eligibility early, as the change opens spots for late-year birthdays but requires proactive applications.
