In a rare and alarming occurrence, two US Navy aircraft operating from the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier crashed into the South China Sea within just 30 minutes of each other. Fortunately, all crew members were rescued and are reported to be in stable condition.

The first accident involved an MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter from Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 73, known as the “Battle Cats.” The chopper went down during a routine flight operation, with all three personnel safely recovered by nearby rescue teams.

Roughly half an hour later, an F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter jet from Strike Fighter Squadron 22 (“Fighting Redcocks”) also crashed during a training exercise. The two pilots managed to eject in time and were later picked up by recovery teams.

Both crashes occurred while the USS Nimitz was returning to its home port in Washington state following a deployment. The vessel, one of the Navy’s most iconic carriers, is nearing decommissioning after more than 50 years of service.
