At least 10 people were killed and several others injured after a stampede at the Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Kasibugga, Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh. The tragedy occurred during a religious festival on Friday when a large crowd gathered for darshan (holy viewing).
Officials said the incident happened after panic broke out near the temple entrance as devotees rushed forward to offer prayers. Eyewitnesses reported that narrow passageways and lack of crowd barriers worsened the situation.
Emergency services were immediately dispatched, and the injured were taken to nearby hospitals. Authorities confirmed that most victims were women and elderly devotees.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed condolences and ordered an investigation into the cause of the Andhra Pradesh temple stampede. He directed local authorities to ensure proper crowd management during upcoming festivals.
Temple authorities have temporarily suspended public entry while police review CCTV footage and interview witnesses to determine accountability.
Compensation for the victims’ families has been announced, and the state disaster response team remains on site to assist with recovery operations.
