Even though breast cancer affects about one in eight women worldwide, a host of myths and misconceptions continue to delay diagnosis and treatment — especially here in the UAE. Leading specialists warn that beliefs such as “only older women get breast cancer” or “if I have no symptoms I’m safe” are not only inaccurate but can be dangerous. Every woman (and indeed men, in rare cases) must stay alert and proactive about screening and early detection.
Many people assume their risk is minimal if they don’t have a family history. In reality, most breast cancer cases are sporadic, driven by lifestyle, hormonal or environmental factors — not just genetics. The notion that only women over a certain age get breast cancer is another harmful myth — younger women and men can also be affected. It’s also incorrect to think that a lump always equals cancer — many lumps are benign, yet any new change in the breast or armpit should prompt a check-up.
Some continue to believe that mammograms are unsafe or unnecessary without symptoms. On the contrary: early-stage breast cancer often shows no outward signs, and mammography remains the best tool to detect it before it becomes palpable. Other persistent myths — like bras, deodorants or under-wire causing breast cancer — have been repeatedly debunked by scientific studies.
For women and men living in the UAE, this means the message is clear: screening and self-awareness save lives. Doctors stress that regardless of age, background or perceived risk, one should know the usual look and feel of their breasts, be aware of any changes, and engage in regular clinical checks when recommended. Overcoming myths and taking action can translate into earlier diagnosis, less intensive treatment, better outcomes and — most importantly — higher survival rates.
