India’s Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), along with DP World and European tech firm Nevomo, is set to pioneer magnetic rail propulsion technology for automated, low-emission cargo movement at India’s busiest port. The pilot project will deploy Nevomo’s MagRail Booster system on a 750-metre track at Deendayal Port in Gujarat, enabling self-propelled, magnetically driven rail cars to transport bulk cargo and containers without traditional locomotives.
This initiative positions Deendayal Port—India’s largest by cargo volume and a consistent national leader for 14 years—as a flagship for sustainable, technologically advanced port logistics. MagRail upgrades existing rail infrastructure without new track building, significantly cutting diesel use and carbon emissions while enhancing yard operations with minimal disruption.
The project aligns with India’s PM Gati Shakti Master Plan and Harit Sagar Green Port Guidelines promoting smart, clean transport infrastructure. A feasibility study will evaluate broader MagRail adoption across India’s maritime network following the pilot.
The agreement was signed during India Maritime Week 2025 in Mumbai, with top officials including Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal and DP World CEO Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem in attendance. Key leaders stressed the project’s role in modernizing ports nationwide, retrofitting current assets for enhanced efficiency and sustainability.
Nevomo’s magnetic propulsion tech, inspired by hyperloop concepts, supports speeds up to 550 km/h. DP World’s extensive Indian presence includes five container terminals with a 6 million TEU annual capacity, seven inland rail terminals, and a vast logistics network covering 15,000 pin codes.
