A tea enthusiast in China made headlines after losing a tailor-made 24-carat gold straw valued at approximately 100,000 yuan (around AED 52,000) during an electric bike ride in Zhejiang province.
The man, identified only by his surname Shou, had commissioned the gold straw specifically for enjoying his favorite milk tea. He initially paid around 90,000 yuan for it, but due to rising gold prices, the straw’s value has since increased.
One evening, while riding home with the precious straw tucked into his trouser pocket, his e-bike hit a manhole cover. The sudden jolt caused the straw to slip out unnoticed. Realizing the loss, he searched for nearly an hour before contacting local police for assistance.
Two responding officers joined the search using flashlights and eventually discovered the gleaming gold straw roughly 100 metres from the spot where it had fallen.
Overwhelmed with relief, Shou thanked the officers and jokingly said he was glad his wife wouldn’t make him “kneel on a washboard” — a humorous idiom used in China for being punished by one’s spouse.
He admitted that the experience taught him an expensive lesson: never store valuable possessions in pockets while riding. Shou plans to melt down the slightly bent straw and have a new one crafted next summer.
