Menopause is a major transition for many women — and among its lesser-discussed effects is hairloss during menopause. As ovarian hormones like oestrogen and progesterone drop, hair growth slows, strands become finer, and scalp texture may change. Experts in the UAE highlight these changes as a natural part of the menopausal journey, alongside hot flashes, sleep disruptions, and mood shifts.
Dr Khulood Alawadi, President of the Menopause Chapter at the Emirates Medical Association, explains that oestrogen supports hair follicles and scalp circulation. Reduced oestrogen and relatively higher androgen levels can trigger miniaturisation of follicles, leading to thinning around the crown or parting line. Hair may also become drier and more brittle due to reduced natural oils.
Other factors such as iron deficiency, thyroid issues, vitamin D or zinc deficiency, rapid weight loss, or medications can worsen hair thinning. Blood tests are recommended to rule out these causes before attributing hairloss solely to menopause.
Preventive and supportive measures include gentle scalp care, limiting chemical or heat treatments, proper nutrition (protein, iron, vitamins A, C, D, zinc, and healthy fats), regular exercise, and stress management techniques like yoga. Medical options in the UAE may include topical minoxidil, low-level laser therapy, microneedling, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and, where suitable, hormone-replacement therapy to stabilise symptoms.
While hair thinning during menopause may not fully reverse, women can slow it significantly and improve hair density by acting early and combining lifestyle, nutrition, and professional care — making hair health a key part of holistic mid-life wellness.
