iOS 26 call screening feature gives iPhone users a powerful new way to combat nuisance and spam calls. Introduced in the recent iOS 26 update available for iPhone 11 and newer models, this feature acts as a virtual gatekeeper by automatically screening calls from unknown numbers before they reach you.

To activate call screening, update your iPhone to iOS 26, then navigate to Settings > Apps > Phone. Scroll to find “Screen Unknown Callers,” where you can choose between three options: “Never” allows all calls, “Silence” sends unknown callers directly to voicemail, and the recommended “Ask Reason for Calling,” which prompts new callers to state their name and purpose.

When enabled, an AI voice similar to Siri will ask unknown callers for their details, transcribing their responses in real time. You’ll get a notification showing the transcript and can decide whether to pick up. If you prefer not to answer, you can reply with preset messages like “I’ll call you later” or type a custom message, read aloud by the AI voice.

While generally effective, the call screening sometimes causes minor inconveniences, such as important calls not connecting if callers hang up prematurely or misunderstand the process. Some users may need to adjust their region and language settings to access the feature fully.

Apple’s call screening follows similar features on Android devices, with Google and Samsung offering advanced spam call filtering. However, iOS 26’s screening adds a robust layer of user control and convenience for iPhone owners facing increasing robocalls.
