Leela Jose P, a spirited 70-year-old Kerala grandmother skydiving Dubai, from the scenic Idukki district in Kerala, India, has become a viral sensation after fulfilling her lifelong dream of skydiving in Dubai. Defying age stereotypes, Leela dared to leap from 13,000 feet above the iconic Dubai skyline, inspiring many with her fearless spirit and zest for life.
Typically leading a quiet life in her forest-rich hometown, Leela’s passion for adventure surprised many. Whenever she saw planes overhead, she wondered about jumping from them. Despite some neighbours laughing at her dream, she was determined to make it a reality during a visit to her son Aneesh P Jose, an Indian expat in Dubai.
With support from her son and daughter-in-law, Leela connected with Skydive Dubai and embarked on the tandem jump, overcoming initial doubts about her age. Her instructor’s question, “Are you sure?” was met with a firm “Yes” in Malayalam—proving age is no barrier to chasing dreams.
Leela’s tandem dive included a freefall of nearly 7,000 feet and a parachute descent offering stunning views of Dubai’s landmarks like the Palm Jumeirah and Burj Khalifa. Though shy among younger participants, she stayed calm and confident, guided by clear instructions despite the language gap.
Reflecting on her flight, Leela said, “It was a beautiful sight,” and described her readiness to swim if anything went wrong, recalling her swimming skills.
Leela’s adventurous spirit extends beyond skydiving. She’s tried ziplining in Wayanad and paragliding in Fujairah, always embracing thrills no matter the age. Her late husband supported her curiosity, and now her son continues that legacy.
Now a grandmother of two, she embraces each day as a bonus and encourages living life without fear. When asked about future dreams, she joked, “I’m ready to go to space. Why not? There’s no age to dream.”
