Rhine Cycle Route Europe’s First Certified Long-Distance Bike Path Opens

Europe’s cycling tourism is taking a major leap forward with the Rhine Cycle Route, a 1,450km trail stretching from the North Sea in the Netherlands to the Swiss Alps. Recognized as Europe’s first certified long-distance cycle path, the route is part of the broader EuroVelo network, an ambitious 99,000km project expected to connect the continent through sustainable travel corridors by 2030.

The Rhine Cycle Route, also known as EuroVelo 15 (EV15), is already attracting global attention. The path runs through six regions across the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Switzerland — tracing one of Europe’s most historic rivers. An impressive 87% of the route is car-free, making it one of the safest and most accessible long-distance trails in the world.

Cyclists traversing the Rhine Route encounter a rich tapestry of landscapes and cultures: from the flat Dutch polders and picturesque Alsace Wine Route to the dramatic Rhine Falls, Lake Constance, and the wooden bridges upstream of Basel. The journey culminates at the official source of the Rhine River, located high in the Swiss Alps — offering breathtaking alpine views and a rewarding finale for endurance cyclists.

According to European cycling authorities, the EV15 route is expected to boost cross-border tourism and promote eco-friendly travel. With dedicated tarmac lanes, meticulous waymarking, and abundant lodging options, it caters to everyone — from professional riders to families exploring on e-bikes.

The EuroVelo project, managed by the European Cyclists’ Federation, currently connects destinations as distant as Trondheim in Norway and Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Upon completion, it will create a continent-wide network that encourages green mobility and sustainable exploration.

Travel analysts believe that with Europe’s growing focus on low-impact tourism and infrastructure designed for cyclists, the Rhine Cycle Route could become a blueprint for future long-distance trails across the world.
