For nearly three decades, Italian-jeweller Roberto Coin has led a creative journey that bridges tradition, craftsmanship, and emotional storytelling. Born in Venice and originally working in the hotel-business theatre of design and service, Coin shifted into jewellery almost by chance. He recalls being drawn not to gemstones but to the accessories and elegance surrounding his first role — “I was fascinated by shoes, bags, fashion,” he says — which evolved into his vocation for gold and gemstones.
Coin treats jewellery not as mere ornamentation, but as “a language of emotion” — a tangible expression of empathy, memory and feeling. For him, designing jewellery is less about status and more about resonance. His pieces draw deeply on the heritage of Italian art, architecture and nature. He describes the challenge: “Almost everything has already been made. My intention is to find something in jewellery that has never existed before.”
Perhaps the most iconic signature of the brand is the hidden ruby embedded inside every piece. Since the 1996 Appassionata collection, Coin has set a small ruby on the interior side of each piece so it rests against the wearer’s skin — invisible to others, intimate to the individual. This ruby serves as a “secret gift of good wishes,” drawing on ancient legends of rubies as talismans of health, love and longevity from Egypt, Burma (now Myanmar) and Hindu tradition.
Coin emphasises ethical sourcing, transparency and sustainability as part of the brand’s foundation. As one of the founding board members of the World Diamond Council, he upholds conflict-free certification for precious stones and gold.
From his Princess Flower and Venetian Princess collections to his environmental-themed Animalier lines, Roberto Coin’s jewellery is crafted to endure. He aims not merely to follow fashion cycles but to create pieces that become heirloom art.
In his own words: “My favourite collection is the next one I am going to design.” That ambition captures the essence of Roberto Coin’s vision — jewellery that tells a story, hides a secret, and celebrates what cannot be seen but can be felt.
