Schengen Biometric Travel Rules: What UAE Travelers Need to Know

Starting October 12, 2025, the European Union will implement the new Entry/Exit System (EES), requiring non-EU travelers—including those from the UAE—to provide biometric data (fingerprints and facial scans) upon entry and exit at Schengen Area borders. This system replaces traditional passport stamping, aiming to enhance border security and streamline travel procedures.

Travelers should ensure their passports are valid and, if possible, biometric-enabled to facilitate smoother processing. It’s advisable to arrive at border checkpoints earlier than usual during the initial rollout phase to accommodate potential delays.

For UAE residents requiring a Schengen visa, biometric data collected during the visa application process will be used for border checks, expediting the entry process.

The EES will be fully operational by April 10, 2026, after which manual passport stamping will be entirely phased out. Travelers are encouraged to stay informed about the new procedures to ensure a seamless travel experience.
