Schengen visa appointment delays for UAE residents remain a significant concern as many plan European winter vacations during the extended school break from late November to early January. However, Monaz Billimoria, Deputy Regional Head UAE at VFS Global, offers a cautiously optimistic outlook for travellers who plan ahead.

Contrary to popular belief, Schengen visa appointment availability in the UAE has actually increased by nearly 10% compared to last year, with further increases expected by year-end. The challenge lies in the unprecedented surge in application numbers, driven by the rapidly growing UAE resident base seeking travel to Europe.

VFS Global advises travellers to avoid last-minute bookings, recommending at least a month’s lead time for visa appointment scheduling. Filing early remains the best strategy to secure slots, since last-minute appointments are highly unlikely due to demand outpacing supply.

Importantly, visa processing times remain stable, with most applications processed within the standard 15 working-day timeline. The apparent delays arise mainly from competing for appointment slots, not from the consulates’ application processing.

For those eyeing the winter school break and holiday season, there is still ample opportunity to secure Schengen visa appointments — but vigilance and early action are crucial. Slots are released periodically, and monitoring availability closely can improve chances of securing travel plans.
