Indian passports in UAE have reached a historic milestone with three distinct designs circulating simultaneously, marking a unique development for Indian expats. With the introduction of the chip-embedded ePassport by the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate in Dubai, Indian families now hold three generations of passport booklets: the pre-2021 design, the 2021 redesigned version, and the latest ePassport featuring an embedded RFID chip and antenna. This diversity will likely persist as family members renew passports at different times.

The easiest way to differentiate these passports is by their cover designs. While the color remains consistent, the 2021 redesign moved “Republic of India” into a prominent font at the top, shifted “Passport” beneath the national emblem—the Lion Capital of Ashoka—and introduced design enhancements. The ePassport retains this layout but adds a gold-colored chip symbol on the cover to signal its advanced technology.

Technically, passport numbering has evolved. Earlier passports utilized a format with one letter followed by seven digits, whereas the ePassport uses two letters followed by six digits, enhancing unique identification that ties to extensive government and international security databases.

Security features have progressively advanced: the pre-2021 passports had basic durability and parental info placement; 2021 versions introduced double lamination, anti-counterfeiting lotus and peacock motifs, and embossed page numbering; the ePassport incorporates state-of-the-art security with its embedded chip secured by Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), ensuring data authenticity and protection against forgery.

All three passports remain valid up to their expiration dates, according to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, and expats only need to switch to the ePassport upon renewal once the issuance system is active at their passport office. The new ePassport digitally and physically safeguards traveler identities globally.
