While recent cuts to undersea cables in the Red Sea have contributed to this disruption, the main bottleneck for many households lies closer to home — outdated Wi-Fi routers.
According to Ookla’s Middle East Fiber and Wi-Fi Report Q2 2025, the UAE boasts a median broadband download speed of 317.98 Mbps and upload speeds of 147.28 Mbps, ranking it among the fastest in the region alongside Qatar and Jordan. Modern Wi-Fi 6 routers can push speeds to over 800 Mbps, vastly outperforming older Wi-Fi 4 models still prevalent in many homes.
The report highlights that many households use outdated routers, commonly from brands like Huawei and TP-Link, which cannot support the latest high-speed fiber plans. Additionally, many devices connect via the slower 2.4 GHz band instead of the faster 5 GHz band, further limiting speeds and causing interruptions.
Upgrade to Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 routers: These provide faster speeds, better coverage, and lower latency.
Use Ethernet cables: A direct wired connection for devices like laptops or gaming consoles can drastically increase speed.
Install mesh Wi-Fi systems: These spread strong signals throughout your home, eliminating dead zones and buffering.
Telecom operators like Etisalat (e&) and du now supply Wi-Fi 6 routers to new subscribers, with some plans including mesh Wi-Fi or advanced fiber-to-the-room technology for seamless gigabit coverage in larger homes. Gigabit plan prices have decreased, making ultra-fast internet more accessible across the UAE.
While fixing the damaged undersea cables in the Red Sea may take up to six weeks, the key to a better internet experience for UAE residents lies in upgrading home networks and adopting newer technologies. With these improvements, browsing, streaming, and working from home can be smooth even amid ongoing regional infrastructure challenges.
