In a significant development in Indian cricket, Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new One Day International (ODI) captain, succeeding Rohit Sharma. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made this announcement ahead of India’s upcoming bilateral series against Australia, scheduled for October and November 2025.
The decision to appoint Gill as the ODI captain marks a shift in leadership strategy, focusing on nurturing young talent for future challenges. Gill, who has been leading the Test team, is set to bring his leadership experience to the 50-over format.
Rohit Sharma, who has been at the helm of India’s ODI team, will continue to be part of the squad but will no longer serve as the captain. This change reflects the BCCI’s long-term vision, aiming to build a leadership structure that aligns with the team’s future goals.
The upcoming series against Australia will feature three ODIs and five T20Is. Alongside Gill’s appointment, Shreyas Iyer has been named as the vice-captain for the ODI format, while Suryakumar Yadav will lead the T20I team.
This leadership transition is seen as a strategic move by the BCCI to prepare the team for upcoming international tournaments, including the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
