Shan Masood to step down as Pakistan Test captain following the South Africa series, with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announcing his appointment as a consultant for international cricket. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi made the announcement after a reception for both the Pakistan and South African teams at Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s residence, confirming Masood as the new director of international cricket operations.

Masood, who has played 44 Tests, 9 ODIs, and 19 T20Is, is expected to balance his new PCB consultancy with ongoing playing duties—an unprecedented dual role at the international level. This move technically goes against PCB’s constitution, which forbids current players from holding official board positions. However, the board cited Masood’s experience and recent Test performances as unique justification for the appointment.

The role replaces Usman Wahla, who was suspended earlier in the year but later reinstated in a different capacity. The PCB had advertised for the director’s post, requiring Test and ODI experience. Local media speculated on Misbah-ul-Haq’s candidacy, but he declined due to other commitments.

Masood’s leadership as Test captain saw mixed results, with four wins and ten losses, but his batting form showed progress. As the PCB prepares for a busy international schedule, including upcoming tours of Bangladesh, West Indies, and England, his appointment signals a new era of cross-functional leadership in Pakistan cricket.
