Mount Merapi Erupts Again- Gulf Repost

Indonesia’s most active volcano, Mount Merapi, erupted on October 29, 2025, sending thick plumes of ash and smoke high into the sky and prompting authorities to maintain a high alert status. The eruption is part of Merapi’s continuous activity which began in December 2020, and recent seismic monitoring indicates increased unrest.

The volcano is located approximately 28 km north of Yogyakarta, on the island of Java. It has erupted regularly since at least 1548 and remains one of the most closely monitored volcanoes in the region. Following the October eruption, Indonesian authorities affirmed that the alert level remains at Level 4, indicating a high risk of further eruptions and urging residents and tourists to steer clear of high-danger zones near the crater.

Mount Merapi’s recent behaviour has included lava dome growth, pyroclastic flows, and avalanches of hot rock and ash traveling up to two kilometres down its slopes in past episodes. While no widespread casualties have been reported for this latest eruption as of now, the potential for large pyroclastic flows and ashfall remains significant. Authorities continue to monitor the volcano around the clock and are preparing contingency plans for further escalation.

This eruption underscores the persistent threat volcanic activity poses in Indonesia, especially on Java where towns and communities lie in proximity to active volcanoes. Residents in the surrounding areas are advised to keep updated with official channels, avoid restricted zones, and prepare for ashfall and possible evacuations.
