The Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) has launched a groundbreaking new mechanism to end monopoly on medical products in the UAE. This initiative will make medicines more accessible, competitively priced, and reduce the risk of shortages.
Under the new rule, pharmaceutical companies must appoint more than one authorised agent for each product marketed in the UAE. This move is part of the Federal Decree-Law No. (38) of 2024, which governs medical products, pharmacists, and pharmaceutical establishments.
EDE states the mechanism supports the UAE’s strategic goals of strengthening pharmaceutical security, enhancing national readiness, and ensuring sustainable availability of medical products. Additionally, it aims to improve the business environment, boost investment attractiveness, and expand treatment options for patients.
