A violent shootout erupted in a crowded downtown nightlife district late Saturday night, leaving two dead and at least 12 others injured, authorities confirmed.
Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys described the incident as a mass shooting involving two parties firing at each other amid a packed street of bars and pedestrians. He said, “They did not care about the people around them when they did it.”
One of the fatal victims was a woman. Among the injured, three were reported in critical condition, including one juvenile. Emergency responders were called to the scene around 11:30 p.m., as local bars and public venues were busy with weekend events.
Despite police presence nearby—units were stationed within roughly 15 meters of the site—the gunmen opened fire, catching bystanders in the crossfire. No suspects have yet been arrested, and authorities have not released details on how many shooters were involved or what type of weapons were used.
Investigators are now examining surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and gathering evidence in an effort to track down those responsible. Mayor Steven Reed echoed the sentiment of outrage, calling the violence “callous” and underscoring the urgency of bringing perpetrators to justice.
The surge in violence comes amid a weekend already bustling with activity: a university homecoming game, a state fair, and a high-profile rivalry football match drew large crowds throughout the city.
