At least 54 people were injured after an explosion ripped through a mosque inside a school complex in central Jakarta on Friday, according to Indonesian police. The blast occurred just before midday prayers at the Islamic Senior High School in the Setiabudi district, sending shockwaves through the area and damaging nearby buildings.

Authorities said the explosion was caused by a gas cylinder that ignited while workers were preparing food for students and staff. The force of the blast shattered windows and caused panic among hundreds of students who were attending classes at the time. Most of the injured were students and school employees, though no fatalities have been reported so far.

Police cordoned off the area shortly after the incident and deployed forensic experts and bomb disposal units to ensure there was no secondary threat. Emergency responders transported the injured to several nearby hospitals, where most are reported to be in stable condition.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as students fled classrooms in panic. Local residents said the sound of the explosion could be heard several streets away. Photographs from the scene showed debris scattered across the school courtyard, broken glass, and damaged prayer facilities inside the mosque.

Jakarta’s acting governor expressed relief that no lives were lost and commended the rapid response of police and emergency services. He also ordered a full review of safety procedures in all educational institutions across the city, particularly those that handle cooking or maintenance activities involving gas or chemicals.

Police confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine whether negligence or equipment failure caused the explosion. Authorities have also assured families that the site will remain closed until it is declared safe.

The Jakarta school blast serves as a stark reminder of the importance of strict safety protocols in public institutions. Local officials said additional inspections will be conducted in the coming days to prevent similar incidents in the future.
