Denmark Social Media Ban Under 15 Protecting Youth Online

Denmark is set to introduce legislation banning social media use for children under the age of 15, with an option for parental consent starting at age 13. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced the initiative during a speech to the Danish Parliament, citing rising levels of anxiety, depression, and reduced concentration among youth, which she attributes to mobile phone and social media use. Frederiksen warned that children are being exposed to harmful content online and that digital platforms are intruding on childhood. This move follows similar efforts in countries like Australia and Norway, where limits are being placed on children’s access to social media to combat the negative effects of exposure to algorithms and screen time. Denmark’s Minister of Digitalisation, Caroline Stage, supported the initiative, emphasizing the need to protect children and reclaim their digital lives from profit-driven platforms. In February, Denmark had already introduced a ban on mobile phones in schools and after-school programs, following recommendations from a government wellbeing commission. The proposal is part of a broader global trend to regulate youth access to technology amid growing health concerns. The ban could come into effect as early as next year.
