Dubai Taxi Ride-Sharing Service

Dubai taxi ride-sharing service is expanding to additional locations following unprecedented success since its launch last year. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is scaling up the initiative with a six-month trial period, introducing new routes and pickup points across Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The original service between Ibn Battuta Mall in Dubai and Al Wahda Mall in Abu Dhabi has achieved a remarkable 228 percent increase in ridership, demonstrating strong community demand for affordable, convenient shared mobility options.

Service expansion details

Adel Shakri, Director of Planning and Business Development at RTA’s Public Transport Agency, confirmed the expansion: “Since its launch last year, the shared taxi service operating between Ibn Battuta Mall in Dubai and Al Wahda Mall in Abu Dhabi has recorded a huge increase of 228 percent in the number of riders choosing it for travel between the two emirates.”

The expanded Dubai taxi ride-sharing service will now operate from two major new hubs:

Al Maktoum International Airport routes:

  • Dubai Marina Mall

  • Business Bay Metro Station

  • Palm Jumeirah – Atlantis Monorail Station

Dubai World Trade Centre routes:

  • Business Bay Metro Station

  • Al Satwa Bus Station

  • Dubai Marina Mall

Strategic objectives and community benefits

The expansion follows comprehensive field studies and detailed route analysis aimed at reducing fares for riders, particularly those who depend on shared transport within Dubai. Shakri explained: “The decision to introduce new locations on trial basis follows field studies and a detailed analysis of potential routes for the taxi ride-sharing service in the emirate. The objective is to reduce fare costs for riders, particularly those who rely on this mode of transport within Dubai.”

Environmental and traffic impact

A primary goal of the Dubai taxi ride-sharing initiative is reducing traffic congestion by enabling multiple passengers to share single taxis, contributing to smoother traffic flow and significant environmental benefits including reduced carbon footprint. The service supports Dubai’s sustainability objectives while improving urban mobility efficiency across the emirate.

Safety and security features

RTA taxis used in the ride-sharing service are equipped with advanced safety features including cameras linked to the Operations Control Centre and driver performance monitoring systems. These technological enhancements ensure passenger safety, comfort, and accountability while maintaining service quality standards.

Curbing unlicensed transport

The initiative has successfully helped reduce unlicensed transport operations by providing riders with safe, regulated, and comfortable mobility through official RTA vehicles. This formalization of shared transit strengthens regulatory compliance and passenger protection across Dubai’s transport ecosystem.

Market reception and future outlook

The exceptional 228 percent increase in riders demonstrates strong community acceptance of the shared taxi concept as an economical, time-efficient alternative to private vehicles and standard taxi services. The six-month trial period will provide valuable data for evaluating the service’s viability and determining potential permanent expansion across additional Dubai locations.
