The reopening of full embassy status in Kabul is being watched closely as a barometer for Afghanistan’s reintegration into broader regional diplomacy under challenging circumstances.

India has announced the India Kabul embassy upgrade 2025, officially elevating its Technical Mission in Kabul to a full embassy, in a move that signals deeper diplomatic engagement with Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover in 2021. During a meeting between External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi, India reaffirmed its commitment to Afghanistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and development. The decision comes amid growing regional shifts, with India seeking to strengthen ties in trade, health, education and expand development and reconstruction assistance. While India has not formally recognized the Taliban regime, this diplomatic upgrade reflects a pragmatic recalibration of policy. It also mirrors efforts by all involved parties to engage more directly on urgent issues such as humanitarian aid and cross-border security. The reopening of full embassy status in Kabul is being watched closely as a barometer for Afghanistan’s reintegration into broader regional diplomacy under challenging circumstances.
