In a landmark decision, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her relentless advocacy for democracy, human rights, and a peaceful transition away from authoritarian rule.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Machado for “keeping the flame of democracy burning amidst a growing darkness,” noting that she has remained in Venezuela despite threats, persecution, and repeated attempts by the government to silence dissent.
Machado’s selection came from a competitive field of 338 nominations, underscoring the committee’s choice to highlight democratic activism in one of the world’s most politically polarized nations.
Her award also drew attention after former US President Donald Trump publicly lobbied for the prize, sparking debate over the influence of politics on Nobel selections.
In Venezuela, Machado’s achievements are especially significant given that she was barred from participating in the 2024 presidential race and now operates under constant threat.
