Kerala Expat Execution Stayed in Yemen - Gulf Repost

The Supreme Court of India has been informed that the execution of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya in Yemen has been temporarily stayed, as diplomatic discussions between India and Yemen continue. The development was revealed during a hearing where the court was reviewing petitions seeking government intervention to save the 38-year-old expatriate.

Execution Stay Amid Ongoing Mediation Efforts

During the proceedings, Attorney General R. Venkataramani informed the bench that a new mediator had joined the talks between Indian and Yemeni officials. He confirmed that “nothing adverse has happened” in the case and that negotiations remain ongoing.

Following these updates, the court acknowledged that the execution has been halted for now and ordered the matter to be re-listed in January 2026, with the flexibility to bring it forward should any urgent developments arise.

Background: Conviction, Appeals & Diplomatic Moves

Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Palakkad in Kerala, was convicted in 2017 for the murder of her Yemeni business partner. In 2020, the Yemeni court sentenced her to death, and her final appeal was dismissed in 2023. She remains imprisoned in Sana’a, awaiting a potential diplomatic resolution.

Under Sharia law, the victim’s family holds the power to pardon her if “blood money” (diya) is accepted — a pathway India’s legal and diplomatic teams are currently exploring. The Indian government has confirmed that it is in active talks with Yemeni authorities and allied nations to secure a settlement.

Priya’s mother has also traveled to Yemen to take part in the negotiations, following permission granted by the Delhi High Court.
