In a significant crackdown, the Myanmar military has raided a large cyber-scam hub near the Thailand border, detaining over 2,000 individuals and confiscating dozens of Starlink satellite internet terminals.

The operation targeted a site known as KK Park in Myawaddy, Kayin State, identified as one of Southeast Asia’s largest cyber scam centres. According to reports, authorities discovered more than 260 unregistered buildings and seized 30 Starlink terminal sets as part of the raid.

These scam operations typically involve online fraud such as romance scams, cryptocurrency cons, and investment schemes. Victims are often tricked by messages from fake profiles, while workers—many trafficked under false job promises—are forced to carry out digital crimes.

Officials in Myanmar claim that certain local militia networks had indirect links to the compound, though groups accused of involvement have denied any connection.

The Myanmar cyber scam hub raid comes amid growing regional pressure to curb transnational online crimes. Southeast Asia has faced increasing scrutiny as law enforcement agencies in Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos work to dismantle similar scam networks.

For UAE and Gulf readers, this crackdown highlights how cybercrime operations in Asia can affect victims globally, including expatriates living in the region. It also underscores the role of Starlink technology in enabling connectivity for both legitimate and illicit activities.
