President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has ordered a full government response to assist communities affected by the powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Cebu late Tuesday night. The tremor, which occurred at 9:59 p.m. local time on September 30, had its epicenter 21 kilometers northeast of Bogo City. As of October 1, the death toll has risen to 60, with over 600 aftershocks recorded, complicating rescue efforts.
In response, government agencies have mobilized resources to provide immediate assistance. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has activated its Quick Response Funds and prepositioned over 2.4 million family food packs for distribution. The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has also directed all agencies to tap into their Quick Response Funds to fast-track emergency operations.
Hospitals in the region, including Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center and Cebu South Medical Center, have confirmed their staff are safe and ready to respond. Medical teams have been deployed to affected areas, with priority support directed to Bogo City.
President Marcos has called on all citizens to stay alert and heed advisories issued by local government units. He extended his condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones and assured that all available resources are being mobilized to assist those affected by the disaster.
