UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has signaled a major overhaul in the country’s asylum system, arguing that urgent changes are needed to respond to illegal immigration more decisively. Under the proposed UK asylum reform, new measures will accelerate the turnaround on asylum claims, tighten border controls, and escalate deportations for individuals whose claims are rejected.
Central to the reform is the establishment of a fast-track returns and enforcement unit tasked with processing cases more quickly and enforcing immigration rules more strictly. Starmer emphasized that restoring public confidence requires cutting down long delays in the appeals process and ensuring that those who do not qualify for asylum are deported without unnecessary delay.
The government also plans to expand cooperation with international partners, build on agreements like the “one in, one out” returns arrangement with France, and use new legislation to close legal loopholes. Critics warn that the reforms must balance security with human rights and fairness, but Starmer insists that the stakes are high — without change, the system risks collapse under growing pressure.
