A specially outfitted US Air Force aircraft, part of the famed 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron — also known as the “Hurricane Hunters” — flew directly into the eye of Hurricane Melissa during a reconnaissance mission over the Atlantic. The storm, now classified as a super-intense system, is approaching landfall with extremely high winds, torrential rainfall and a massive storm surge.
Video footage released by the crew shows the aircraft entering the clear, calm centre of the storm after passing through the swirling eyewall. Inside the eye, conditions drop to eerie stillness even as the tempest rages all around — a stark contrast and a hauntingly beautiful view of nature’s power. The mission’s data collection was critical for tracking Melissa’s intensity and refining forecasts ahead of its landfall.
As Melissa advances, authorities warn of significant destruction. The aircraft’s daring flight provides not just dramatic visuals, but vital insight into how the storm is evolving — and how communities in its path should prepare.
