Remit or Hold - Gulf Repost

Dubai: With several Asian currencies hovering near recent lows against the UAE dirham, expatriates in the UAE are reconsidering when to send money home — the debate centres on whether to “remit or hold”.

The Indian rupee, Pakistani rupee and Philippine peso remain relatively weak against the dirham, giving remitters enhanced purchasing power in their home countries. As of November 3, one UAE dirham fetched about 24.11 Indian rupees and 15.93 Philippine pesos — favourable levels compared to earlier periods.

Financial advisers say the current trend offers an opportunity for workers to maximise value if they choose to remit now. However, the flip side is a question of timing — should one act now or wait for even more favourable exchange movements? The phrase “remit or hold” has become a practical mantra in remittance circles.

For many UAE‑based expatriates, the decision brings two key considerations: immediate support for family versus the possibility of securing even better rates. While rates currently favour senders, forecasting future shifts remains challenging.

Remittance platforms note increased activity as families exploit the weakened home‑country currencies. But they also caution about sending large lumps at once without considering fees, transfer timing and potential currency rebounds.

In this environment, UAE expatriates are advised to monitor live forex rates, compare remittance fees, and lock in transfers when rates hit personal thresholds. Whether they choose to remit now or hold in anticipation of further shifts, the current scenario underscores the power of timing in cross‑border money flows.
