The Asia‑Pacific robotics championship, RoboCup 2025, has officially commenced in Abu Dhabi, aligning with the inaugural Abu Dhabi Autonomous Week. The event is being staged at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) under the auspices of Khalifa University of Science and Technology.
This year’s championship features diverse contest categories including robot soccer, rescue and disaster‑response robotics, domestic and service robots, smart automation systems, and dedicated divisions for schools and universities.
A key highlight is the introduction of a 5 vs 5 humanoid robot soccer match format for the first time in the tournament’s history, demonstrating rapid advances in robotic coordination, autonomy and intelligence.
Beyond competition, the event offers workshops, lectures and panel discussions that bring together engineers, researchers and students from around the world. It serves as a live testing ground for cutting‑edge AI and robotics technologies including computer vision, motion control, reinforcement learning and multi‑robot coordination.
Organisers say the championship supports the UAE’s strategic goals around innovation, digital transformation and building a knowledge‑based economy. The local organising committee, led by Khalifa University, engaged regional and international partners across academia, industry and government in preparation.
In total, more than 700 participants from 22 countries are taking part. This includes 22 teams from Singapore, 19 from Japan, 18 from Russia, 10 from China and five from the UAE.
The staging of RoboCup 2025 in Abu Dhabi underscores the city’s ambition to become a global hub for advanced technology, automation and robotics.
